Can Claude answer questions from WooCommerce?

A simple, owner-level walkthrough for stores that run on WooCommerce: what Claude can answer, how the live connection works, and how to keep it read-only by the access you grant.

Short answer

Yes. WooCommerce is a self-hosted store on WordPress, and it has a live REST API, so Claude reads your store directly and in real time, with no export to schedule. We put that connection behind a secure gateway, using a read-only key you generate. You ask about orders and products, and Claude answers from your live store. Read-only by grant: nothing writes back unless you deliberately grant write access.

An owner who runs the store on WooCommerce, already pays for Claude, and wants to ask plain questions about orders and products without exporting spreadsheets or building reports.

  • A WooCommerce store on WordPress, reachable over HTTPS.
  • Admin access to generate a REST API key.
  • The store’s base URL.
  • A Claude account for each person who will ask questions.

This is a real setup-and-verify procedure. Follow it, and check the answer yourself before you rely on it.

  1. You generate a read key. In WP-Admin, under WooCommerce, Settings, Advanced, REST API, you create an API key with read access. The key grants exactly the read scopes you select, and your credentials stay out of public examples.
  2. You supply the store URL and key. You give SkyNexus the store’s base URL and the read key. We use them to read your store through the WooCommerce REST API.
  3. SkyNexus puts it behind the gateway. The connection runs behind a secure MCP gateway, with per-person permissions. It reads your live store directly; there is no export and no separate copy.
  4. Add the connector in Claude. Using the endpoint and instructions SkyNexus supplies, add the custom connector in Claude, authenticate with your provisioned access, and confirm the tools you expect are present. Then start a test conversation.
  5. Run one bounded question, and specify it fully. Ask a concrete question, for example how many orders shipped in a named date range, and state the period, its date semantics, the status filter, and the timezone. Because WooCommerce is live, the answer reflects the store as it is now.
  6. Reconcile against WooCommerce, and investigate any gap. Open your WooCommerce reports and compare the same period. Order status, refunds, tax, and date semantics can move a figure, so if the numbers do not match, investigate before you rely on the answer.
  7. When something is off. An authentication failure is not the same as a scope your key does not grant. If Claude asks you to reconnect, follow the supplied sign-in steps and retry; if it still fails, contact SkyNexus. If an expected field is missing, check that your key grants the read scope for it. To stop future calls, revoke the key in WP-Admin: that ends new reads through it.

It can

  • Answer in real time about orders and products, and the other read scopes your key grants.
  • Let you check a figure yourself: reconcile it against your own WooCommerce reports.
  • Run from the Claude a person already uses, by adding one connector.

It cannot (by the access you grant)

  • Write to or change your store. The key grants read access only; a write would need write access you deliberately grant.
  • Reach data outside the read scopes your key grants.
  • Reach anything outside WooCommerce. This connection is to your store, and only your store.

Not with the access we ask for. We request a read key, so the connection reads your store and does not write to it. WooCommerce keys can also carry write access, but that is a separate scope you would grant deliberately, never something the connection takes on its own.

Real time. WooCommerce is read live through its REST API, so an answer reflects the store as it is at the moment you ask, not a copy from earlier. A figure is still only as sound as the query behind it, so specify the period, status filter, and timezone, and reconcile against your WooCommerce reports before relying on it.

The gateway is built on MCP, an open protocol that ChatGPT also supports, so MCP is a potential path to the same gateway. Whether a given ChatGPT account can add the connector, authenticate, and see the expected tools still has to be validated; protocol support alone is not a working pairing. If you later change assistants, the connection setup stays in place: see switching AI assistants without rebuilding the connection.

EvidenceSupported capability under gate

WooCommerce publishes a live REST API that a store owner can open with a read-only key, so this is a self-serve connection, not a vendor arrangement we have to wait for. We connect it the same gateway way we run in production on The Edge, read-only and per-person, which we last verified running on August 27, 2026. What a person can reach depends on the read scopes the key grants and on WooCommerce’s own API.
