Can Claude answer questions from Shopify?

A simple, owner-level walkthrough for stores that run on Shopify: what Claude can answer, how the live connection works, and how to keep it read-only by the scopes you grant.

Supported capabilityApplies to Shopify · Claude

Short answer

Yes. Shopify is a hosted store platform with a live Admin API, so Claude reads your store directly and in real time, with no export to schedule. We put that connection behind a secure gateway, using read access you grant to a custom app. You ask about orders and products, and Claude answers from your live store. Read-only by grant: nothing writes back unless you deliberately grant write scopes.

An owner who runs the store on Shopify, already pays for Claude, and wants to ask plain questions about orders and products without exporting spreadsheets or building reports.

  • A Shopify store, with admin access to create a custom app.
  • The read scopes you want the connection to have, decided up front.
  • A Claude account for each person who will ask questions.

This is a real setup-and-verify procedure. Follow it, and check the answer yourself before you rely on it.

  1. You create a custom app. In your Shopify admin, you create a custom app and grant it read access to the data you want reachable. You authorize it with your own identity, and your credentials stay out of public examples.
  2. You supply the access. You give SkyNexus the app’s access, and we read your store through the Shopify Admin API. Because Shopify is hosted and live, there is no export and no separate copy.
  3. SkyNexus puts it behind the gateway. The connection runs behind a secure MCP gateway, with per-person permissions.
  4. Add the connector in Claude. Using the endpoint and instructions SkyNexus supplies, add the custom connector in Claude, authenticate with your provisioned access, and confirm the tools you expect are present. Then start a test conversation.
  5. Run one bounded question, and specify it fully. Ask a concrete question, for example how many orders were placed in a named date range, and state the period, its date semantics, the status filter, and the timezone. Because Shopify is live, the answer reflects the store as it is now.
  6. Reconcile against Shopify, and investigate any gap. Open your Shopify reports and compare the same period. Order status, refunds, tax, and date semantics can move a figure, so if the numbers do not match, investigate before you rely on the answer.
  7. When something is off. An authentication failure is not the same as a scope your app was not granted. If Claude asks you to reconnect, follow the supplied sign-in steps and retry; if it still fails, contact SkyNexus. If an expected field is missing, check that the app grants the read scope for it. To stop future calls, uninstall or revoke the custom app in your Shopify admin: that ends new reads through it.

It can

  • Answer in real time about orders and products, and the other read scopes you grant.
  • Let you check a figure yourself: reconcile it against your own Shopify reports.
  • Run from the Claude a person already uses, by adding one connector.

It cannot (by the scopes you grant)

  • Write to or change your store. The app is granted read scopes only; a write would need write scopes you deliberately grant.
  • Reach data outside the read scopes you granted the app.
  • Reach anything outside Shopify. This connection is to your store, and only your store.

Not with the access we ask for. We request read scopes, so the connection reads your store and does not write to it. Shopify apps can also carry write scopes, but those are separate scopes you would grant deliberately, never something the connection takes on its own.

Real time. Shopify is read live through the Admin API, so an answer reflects the store as it is at the moment you ask, not a copy from earlier. A figure is still only as sound as the query behind it, so specify the period, status filter, and timezone, and reconcile against your Shopify reports before relying on it.

The gateway is built on MCP, an open protocol that ChatGPT also supports, so MCP is a potential path to the same gateway. Whether a given ChatGPT account can add the connector, authenticate, and see the expected tools still has to be validated; protocol support alone is not a working pairing. If you later change assistants, the connection setup stays in place: see switching AI assistants without rebuilding the connection.

EvidenceSupported capability under gate

Shopify publishes a live Admin API that a store owner can open by creating a custom app with read scopes, so this is a self-serve connection, not a vendor arrangement we have to wait for. We connect it the same gateway way we run in production on The Edge, read-only and per-person, which we last verified running on August 27, 2026. What a person can reach depends on the read scopes the app is granted and on Shopify’s own API.
