Can Claude answer questions from QuickBooks Online?

A simple guide for owners on QuickBooks Online about whether Claude can work with it, and what to watch.

Short answer

Yes. Intuit offers its own QuickBooks connector for Claude, available to US customers on QuickBooks Online. You sign in with your QuickBooks user and Claude can pull reports such as profit and loss and cash flow, and look at transaction history. The same connector can also create and change records, such as invoices and estimates, so it is not read-only. Intuit also publishes an open source MCP server and a public Accounting API for teams that want a custom setup. Where we help is when you want QuickBooks answered alongside your other systems, like your POS, with access limited to reading first.

An owner who keeps the books in QuickBooks Online and wants a straight answer on whether Claude can work with it, and how much access to give it.

  • A QuickBooks Online subscription. Intuit lists QuickBooks Online, Intuit Enterprise Suite, and Intuit Accountant Suite.
  • A US company. Intuit says the connector is US only for now.
  • A Claude account for each person who will ask questions. Intuit does not state which Claude plan is required.
  • A decision on who should be allowed to create or change records through Claude.
  1. The path. Intuit’s connector runs inside Claude. You add it and sign in with your QuickBooks user. No developer app or API keys are needed for that route.
  2. The custom path. Intuit’s Accounting API uses OAuth 2.0 and a registered developer app. Intuit’s open source MCP server is built on that API. It can switch off writes, updates, and deletes with settings.
  3. The limit to set. Intuit’s connector can write. For a team, start read-only and turn writing on deliberately.

It can

  • Answer from financial reports, such as profit and loss and cash flow, and from transaction history.
  • Create and edit invoices, estimates, customers, and products, if you let it. Intuit says deletes ask for your confirmation.
  • Through a custom setup, run read-only so nothing in your books changes.

It cannot (today)

  • Be used through Intuit's connector outside the US.
  • See data that lives in your other systems. The connector reads QuickBooks only.
  • Guarantee answers are right. Check numbers that matter against the report in QuickBooks.

Often, no. If your questions are about your books alone, Intuit’s connector is the simplest place to start. A custom connection makes sense when you want QuickBooks answered next to your POS or CRM, when you want one read-only gateway with per-person permissions, or when you are outside the US.

  • Write access. Decide who can create invoices or import transactions through Claude.
  • API usage on custom builds. Intuit meters most data-out API calls under its App Partner Program. Its free Builder tier caps those calls each month. A custom build should be sized for that. A single store’s question volume is unlikely to reach the cap, but this is not measured.

We also connect to QuickBooks Online ourselves, for our own books. In our setup, every change goes through a check before it posts, and reviewing the bank feed stays a manual step because our connection cannot reach it.
