Out of the box, Claude can’t see your business. Not your inventory, not your customers, not your sales. When you ask it “what’s my best seller?” and it can’t tell you, it isn’t being coy. There is no wire between the chat window and your store.
Connecting your Claude means building that wire — on purpose, with rules.
Here’s what the pieces are, in plain terms.
A connector reaches one thing
A connector is a small piece of software that lets your AI reach one specific tool. One connector for your customer list. Another for your job board. Each one has to be set up, signed into, and given permission on its own.
The AI companies make connectors for big-name apps, and they work. But every connector you add is one more set of permissions to think about — its own settings, its own pop-ups, its own decisions about what the AI can touch.
A gateway is the one place they come through
A gateway is different. It’s not another connector — it’s the one place your AI’s connections come through. One point of control for your whole business, instead of a separate setting on every app.
Why does that matter? Because that’s where you decide things.
Who gets a key. What’s inside for the AI to use. What each person’s key opens. When everything comes through one place, you make those decisions once, and they hold.
What it looks like when it’s connected
Once your Claude is connected through a gateway, you ask it questions the way you already do — except now it can answer from your actual business. Your customer list. Your sales pipeline. Your job board. Ask it what’s stuck, what’s sitting unassigned, which stage is piling up — and it answers from today’s board, not a guess.
And the part that matters as much as what it can do: what it can’t. Your AI gets a short list of what it’s allowed to do. Anything not on the list isn’t refused — it just isn’t there. There’s nothing to misuse, because it doesn’t exist behind the gateway.
What connecting does NOT mean
It doesn’t mean moving your data anywhere. Your tools stay where they are.
It doesn’t mean a migration, new software for your staff to learn, or an IT project.
And it doesn’t mean handing your whole business to an AI. That’s the point of the gateway: connected is not the same as wide open.
